Mary Woodcock Johnson

Oil & Watercolor Paintings

I am a Maine native who has lived, painted and worked in the Adirondacks since 1984. I don't remember a time before drawing and painting.

As a child my family regularly held drawing and painting contests which are some of my happiest memories because I often won! Figures and animals in their environments were the subjects of my childhood and they remain frequent subjects. Today, my oil and watercolor paintings explore the relationship between figures and forms and their environments with a concentration on street scenes and and still life.

Earning a BS in Art Education from the university of Maine, Orono, studying for three years at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and receiving an MA in Liberal Studies from SUNY PLattsburgh completed my formal education. I taught art for over thirty years in Maine and NY, including twenty seven years at the Lake Placid Elementary School.

Although I am retired from teaching, I often think of the wonderful and colorful artworks created by my students. They remain an inspiration!
